 Goooood morning, TRSB-ers!

Today is the day - final check in.  (Insert appropriately dramatic music here.)

This reminder is going to be long - to save your eyes if you're in a rush, the key message for writers is, please check in within the next 24 hours to tell us you're on course to post your fic in the AO3 collection by 25th August.  As mentioned in the last check in email and the original posted schedule, if you don't check in this time you will be automatically defaulted and you will not be permitted to take part next year.  (A couple of you have checked in ahead of time, which is fine, you don't need to check in again.)

Artists, if you haven't already, please supply your final art to your writers unless you've agreed another arrangements.  Writers, if you have an art-related problem, please speak up now!

 Other stuff...

Want to sign up as an artist for TRSB but not sure what to draw?

Want to sign up as an author but worried there might not be enough art featuring characters you can write?

Want to join the TRSB19 but not sure what you want to do?

Never fear, help is here!

Nature is presenting its best colours all around us in the Mods' part of the world, and in this spirit of giving, we wish to present to you:

The TRSB Suggestion form!

By means of which anyone can offer suggestions for art prompts they’d like to see! (disclaimer: suggestions made via this form are NOT guaranteed to appear in the event, and artists are under no obligation to use them.)

This handy-dandy form connects to This Spreadsheet Over Here, so keep an eye out and see if any of the suggestions tickle your fancy!

And remember, you can still sign up as both an Artist and an Author! (And a Pinch-Hitter, of course!)

Suggesting prompts is NOT dependent on participating in the event and is open to ALL who wish to play.

xoxo, Mods Raiy and Narya

Hi, fellow Tolkien fans!

We are thrilled to announce that signups for the Tolkien Reverse Summer Bang 2019 are now officially open.

Sign up as an artist here

Sign up as an author here

Sign up as a pinch hitter here

A summary of key changes from last year's event can be found here; the full FAQs can be found here.

(Don’t forget that the signup itself is not an obligation; if you’re an author and you think you might like to create a treat, but know you can’t commit to a full collaboration, sign up anyway so we can give you access to the gallery, and write a treat for one of our amazingly talented artists!)

Please spread the word among your fellow artists and writers, whichever corner of the Tolkien fandom you come from!  We can’t wait to have you along for the ride - whether you prefer bookverse, movieverse, gameverse, apocryphal HoME canon, or Tolkien's works set outside the Middle-earth cycle.

Good luck in your creative endeavours!

Folks, thank you for your patience - I am happy to announce that the updated FAQs for TRSB19 is live and can be found here!  Please spread the word and start getting excited...

If you're thinking of signing up then we encourage you to read all the way through whether you've participated before or not - but here's a quick summary of some key changes and clarifications, based on prior year feedback:

  • Authors must have an AO3 account; this is to make it easier for the mods to monitor who has completed their fic in the requisite timeframe, find pinch hitters if necessary, and ensure no-one goes away disappointed.  If you don't have an AO3 account and you want to take part, please either join their waiting list in plenty of time, or contact Raiyana or Narya.
  • This wasn't specifically stated one way or the other last year, but just to be clear, you can submit movieverse prompts, prompts for lesser known works by Tolkien (e.g. The Fall of Arthur, Leaf by Niggle) and/or other works with a clear link to his life or creative output (e.g. the new Tolkien film, the Shadow of Mordor games)
  • Crossovers between Tolkien canons – for example, Roverandom meeting  up with Gandalf – are permitted.  Crossovers with works not linked to Tolkien – for example, Elladan and Elrohir joining The Avengers – are not.
  • This year, for most artists, final art is due a week in advance of final check in.  However...
  • ...if artists want to be completely hands off, and choose this option at signup, they must provide the finished artwork much earlier (2nd June) to avoid the risk of an author only learning about an important detail at the last minute.
  • The early deadline doesn't apply if the artist chooses the 'Author's choice' collaboration level, and it is the author who chooses to be hands off.
  • Bans have been introduced for defaulters.
  • Treats are actively encouraged; hopefully this will mitigate some of the disappointment if you don't get your preferred art.
  • Collaboration levels are defined in the FAQs.
  • There was a lot of confusion around posting last year.  There is more detail in the full FAQs, but here is a summarised version of the 2019 process:

1. Artists are responsible for posting their art to the platform of their choice (e.g. DeviantArt).  This will inevitably have to be slightly before reveals, so that the author can link to or embed the artwork in their fic.
2. Authors must put their completed fic in the AO3 collection by 25th August.
3. Fics are revealed on 1st September.
4. One of your pair (it's up to you who) should create a Tumblr promotional post on or just after this date, advertising the amazing results of your collaboration.  Details of what should go in the post are in the full FAQ, and will be provided to participants again via email nearer the time.
5. Provide the mods with a link to your promotional post via the GoogleForm which we will circulate nearer the time.
6. The mods will then reblog the posts in staggered schedule to ensure maximum exposure for each team.

Yes, we know, it’s only February, but for those who were wondering and for anyone who likes to plan ahead, we can confirm that TRSB WILL BE RUNNING IN 2019.

The mods are currently working on a schedule and updated rule set for the 2019 event; if you have thoughts on how we could improve on 2018 that you haven’t shared already, our handy Google form is still open for comments.

We hope you’re excited!  Tell your friends and keep an eye on the blog - more information coming soon.

If you can’t wait for summer to join in with the Tolkien fandom goodness, be sure to check out Back to Middle-earth Month, the annual Tolkien fanwork fest which runs in March.  This year’s format is Bingo Redux, card claims are open, and everyone is welcome, whether you prefer Elves or Men, Dwarves or Hobbits, First Age or Fourth, film canon, game ‘verse AUs, or obscure nuggets of linguistic detail.  Hope to see you there!
