Challenge #8

Talk about your creative process.

So, that's how I write things. I quite enjoyed writing for this challenge: it was nice to thing about how I do things and compare them to how I used to do it. There's been a lot of trial and error over the years.

I used to have to write analyses of my own writing for university (my BA is in English Lit and Creative Writing, and we had to do that for the CW part) and it used to make me want to die inside from how fucking pretentious the whole exercise was. They were never really accurate either, mostly because they talked about symbolism more than "I wrote this for a grade and I hate this teacher, so fuck it." But now I'm now kind of wondering what an analysis piece would look like for one of my fics. Huh. Let me know if you want to see one someday, I guess.

Challenge #7

LIST THREE (or more) THINGS YOU LIKE ABOUT YOURSELF. They don’t have to be your favorite things, just things that you think are good. Feel free to expand as much or as little as you want

1. I like my creativity. I think I'm a fairly solid writer, and I enjoy reading back over my own stuff at times because I'm the audience I write for the most. I've also spent the last year or so learning how to paint with oils, which has been pretty fun to explore.

2. I'm pretty adventurous. I'm up for trying pretty much anything at least once (my hard limit is cave diving), whether it's an activity or something to eat. I was raised to not say I don't like something without trying it first, and that's kind of stuck with me. It's led to me eating ready salted crickets (crunchy, but not much in the way of flavour), but it's stuck regardless. I also enjoy learning how to cook different things, and experimenting with putting new ingredients together.

3. I've developed some good boundaries. I used to be a bit of a people-pleaser, but I've become a lot more sure of myself in recent years. I've also stopped caring so much about what other people think of me, and while I'm still generally a kind and helpful person, I'm a lot more protective of myself.

Challenge #6

Top 10 Challenge.

I decided to write about the top 10 books and short stories that I read this year. I read less this year than I did in 2024. Partially due to availability: English books are possible to buy here, and I'm a big fan of a not very local second-hand bookshop that primarily buys from and sells to the expat community. The bookshop in my local mall also has a surprisingly large selection of foreign-language books, although they're a lot more expensive and the organisation of that section relies on a system that I haven't been able to decipher yet, so there's no way to find anything quickly. You can only go if you're prepared to browse for hours.

Anyway, here's the list! It's not in any particular order; it's just ten things I liked.

For [community profile] seasons_of_fandom's round 1, challenge #24: triptychs.

Title: 1. Blight; 2. Calling; 3. Peace
Fandom: Dragon Age: Origins
Relationship: Female Warden
Rating: M/Gen
Word count: 100 x 3
Tags: Major Character Death, Angst, Past Tense, Present Tense, Future Tense
Summary:
1. The Warden had to believe there was a reason for this.
2. The Warden fights her Calling, and searches for answers.
3. The Warden will never know the origin of the Blight

1. Blight
There had to be a reason for this, some explanation lost to time. The Grey Wardens were an order of secrets, and the frequent violent deaths might keep them from passing those on to another generation. She nearly went to face an archdemon without knowing what that would cost, so she had to believe that there were other things that she didn’t know, that even veteran Wardens didn’t know. She wouldn’t just wait for her Calling, accepting it and future Blights as inevitable. There had to be a better way, and she wasn’t going to stop until she found it.

2. Calling
When she hears the Calling, she’s determined to fight it. She knows all horror stories of what happens when a Warden ignores their Calling, but she’s not ready to give up. It’s too early, it’s not even fifteen years yet, there has to be more time. She doesn’t follow the Calling, and one day it stops, just as suddenly as it started. It’s another mystery that leaves her with more questions than answers, but that’s a good thing. As long as she has questions, she still has something to chase in this hopeless hunt for a cure for all Wardens.

3. Peace
When the true horrors of the Blight are finally revealed, it won’t be to her. Her rotting body won’t stand more than short trips anymore, and she’ll have long since abandoned daylight, so she won’t be the one fighting when Weisshaupt falls, she won’t meet the creators of the Blight or learn how it came to be. But she will know, without being told, that the worst is over. The taint will still be in her blood when her eyes close for what will be the final time, but the Blight will be calmer, and she will be at peace.

Title: 1. Jamie; 2. Zoe; 3. Doctor
Fandom: Doctor Who (1963)
Relationship: Second Doctor & Zoe Heriot & Jamie McCrimmon
Rating: T/Gen
Word count: 100 x 3
Tags: Episode: War Games, Amnesia, Angst
Summary:
1. Jamie fights the Redcoats, he never gives up on a fight.
2. Zoe has too much on her mind after the attack to remember what she was thinking of doing.
3. The Doctor knew their memories would be taken, but he needed them to accept surrender.

Jamie
Jamie feels disoriented for only a second, but he can’t waste any time to gather his thoughts. There’s a Redcoat there, and Jamie knows one thing, he was fighting, and he has to keep on fighting. That’s something too important to forget, he would never willingly give up, no matter how hopeless the fight. Dying for a cause is better than staying alive for nothing, and he wouldn’t want to survive if it meant that he had to abandon what’s important to him. He wouldn’t do it unless… He doesn’t have time for this, he has to get to safety.

Zoe
Zoe thinks that there’s something that she wanted to do, but just as soon as the thought forms in her head, it’s gone. It couldn’t have been that important if it’s gone so easily, and she has more important things to worry about. They might have survived the attack, but there’s still damage to survey and repair, and that’s something that she can help with. She never let herself be distracted before, and she doesn’t understand why it almost happened now, but she returns to her tasks. Unlike those men, she can’t just run away after the threat is gone.

Doctor
The Doctor sees Jamie and Zoe back in their own times, and at least he knows that they’re safe now. He couldn’t save himself, he couldn’t even save their memories, but they are still alive and somewhere safe, relatively speaking. It’s because of them that he had to admit defeat and convince them to surrender, rather than risk what the Time Lords might do to them if they resisted. But it’s because he knows the two of them well that he lied by omission, and convinced them to go, knowing and not saying that their memories would be taken away.

Four things make a post

ermingarden: medieval image of two people with books (reading)
[personal profile] ermingarden
1. I donated blood today, mentioned it in a text message to my dad, and received a reply asking "How did the blood removal go?", which is a masterful example of making something sound wildly ominous while still technically being an accurate description! ("Blood removal" went fine, as usual.) Side note: If you're in NY or NJ and are able to donate blood, please consider scheduling an appointment ASAP - we currently have less than a two-day supply and a blood emergency has been declared.

2. Recent reads:
- The Tsar of Love and Techno, by Anthony Marra, is a collection of interconnected short stories set in Russia, from the 1930s to the present (and arguably outer space in the near future, depending on how you read the last story). I read this for a book club with some coworkers and enjoyed it. Some stories are naturally stronger than others, but it's good throughout and at times excellent.

- New York Sketches is a collection of E. B. White's short pieces about NYC - vignettes, poems, brief essays, and assorted snippets resistant to categorization. It's very fun! A quick read, if you plow straight through it - I bought my copy at a bookstore in Washington Heights and finished it by the time I made it to Chinatown, so somewhere around an hour - but also a book amenable to being read in bits and pieces. Pages 35-44, devoted to the observation of pigeons and their nests (with illustrations!), particularly charmed me: "While [pigeon nests] endure we must note their locations, elevate our gaze above the level of our immediate concerns, imbibe the sweet air and perfect promise: the egg miraculous upon the ledge, the bird compact upon the egg, its generous warmth, its enviable patience, its natural fortitude and grace."

- Death in Dover is the latest book in Maureen Ash's Templar Knight Mysteries series. Unfortunately, it does not measure up to the earlier books in the series. I think it's primarily a matter of editing, or the lack thereof: The first eight books, through A Holy Vengeance, were traditionally published, but starting with Sins of Inheritance they've been self-published, and there's a noticeable difference. (Actually, I've noticed a distinction among the trad-published books as well: the first six were published by Berkeley, a Penguin subsidiary, while the seventh and eighth were published by a different Penguin subsidiary, InterMix, and there's clearly a bit less attention devoted to the seventh and eighth compared to the previous, including less detailed covers; I also believe that's when they started to be published as ebooks only, though I can't confirm that.) Even compared to the other self-published books in the series, though, Death in Dover disappoints. I hate to say this, I really do - you all know by now that this series is one of my favorites - but I unfortunately can't recommend this book.

3. I just started Mansfield Park, at the suggestion of [personal profile] fiona15351, who wants to know what I think of it. I'm not far enough in to think much of anything, though I did accidentally text Fiona "Mary Crawford is such a butch omg" earlier today. I meant bitch! That typo is far too easy to make, in either direction.

4. Tomorrow is a red letter day: the anniversary of my adopting Queenie! Hard to believe it's been a year already! Cats may not keep calendars, but I do have a gift for her.

My cat's face

I don't know how I ever managed without a cat before!

Snowflake Challenge: A warmly light quaint street of shops at night with heavy snow falling.

In your own space, create a list of at least three things you'd love to receive, a wishlist of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it and include a link to your wishlist if you feel comfortable doing so.

1. Fan art - I adore receiving fan art for my writing. It always makes my day and I love going back and staring at it over and over again. My writing can be found here. If anything inspires you, then I'd love to see the result.

2. Icons - I'm always on the hunt for new icons that represent my current fandoms. Icons for IT, YuGiOh! DM, MDZS and SVSSS are all very much appreciated as are more gothic/spooky-themed ones.

3. Fandom recs - IT: Welcome to Derry finally inspired me to get my shit together and get a decent VPN, so I'm no longer restricted to things that are available only in Vietnam. So, recs please! I'd love to expand my fandoms list. I'm usually into horror, crime, or things that can be construed in a vaguely spooky way, but I do also enjoy fantasy - specifically either classic fantasy, e.g. The Lord of the Rings, or xianxia.

Day 3: Write a love letter to fandom. It might be to fandom in general, to a particular fandom, favourite character, anything at all.

Fandom, I love you and I don't know what to do you with you. I can't imagine not being a part of it even as I struggle to be a part of it. And for all the negatives over the years, you've brought me far more joy.

*

Day 4: Rec The Contents Of Your Last Page: Any website that you like, be it fanfiction, art, social media, or something a bit more eccentric!

The last fannish thing I looked at was a chapter within [personal profile] starspray's marvelous Silmarillion fanfic series focusing on Maglor-and-family "Meanwhile the World Goes On" because I'm in the middle of rereading it. The series summary: Following Maglor as he suffers through captivity in Dol Guldur, and his journey to healing afterward--and then the journey to reconciliation of all the House of Feanor. Ratings and warnings vary by fic; it's still a WIP series and has consistent, frequent updates. It's available on SWG and on AO3.

I'm just going to link my FandomTrees page, which has four wishes: https://fandomtrees.dreamwidth.org/207803.html
Reveals are January 17. The wishes are for prompts for Star Wars Disney canon fic, asking for fic recs for Star Wars Legends (focused on Luke or Luke/Mara), video game recs, and GERD-friendly recipes (as I am newly diagnosed and struggling a bit).

Challenge #4: Rec The Contents Of Your Last Page

Any website that you like, be it fanfiction, art, social media, or something a bit more eccentric!

I think that, outside of fandom spaces like DW and Ao3, the fannish site I've been using the most recently has been the Stephen King Wiki. For obvious reasons, I guess XD Not to say that I don't like rewatching the movies/series at every opportunity, or reading the books, but when I'm writing, I don't always want to find a page or a clip for a quick detail.

(For anyone who is curious, it's possible to buy English-language novels here - and I have! - but availability is pretty much up to fate and ordering them to be imported can be prohibitively expensive. Yay, taxes.)

I was also involved in the creation of a zine last year, so I'm going to rec it here. I wrote for the ABCs of Problematic Kink zine, which can be read and downloaded here. My letter was N for Necrophilia (it's on pages 31 and 32), and this was the project that I finally decided to write MDZS fic for. It was really fun to be involved with: the community involved in creating the zine were all very friendly and supportive, and honestly, the whole thing was a blast. So, if you fancy having a bit extra short, kinky, dead-dove creations in your life, please take a look!

I'm already behind in these snowflake prompts, and I was already thinking about skipping this one because when I think of pets in the Silmarillion fandom, Huan comes in mind at first, and I don't really have much to say about Huan. He's the goodest boy, of course, but I'm more like a cat person, and in Tolkien's world, cats were not much appreciated.
Tolkien wasn't a cat person for sure.
But there is fanfic.

I love Aipilosse's What Brings Us Together where Sauron returns to Valinor as a cat who becomes of course Celebrimbor's pet before he remembers his past. Of course, the story only goes on from there, but there's this cute pet part, too.

This little book meme is shamelessly lifted from [personal profile] calliopes_pen.

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Turn to page 126
3. The 6th full sentence is your life in 2026.

My nearest book is The Shining by Stephen King, so we're off to a great start before I've even opened it.

I'm going to include the following lines since this is actually a bit of dialogue followed by a lovely little sinister premonition.

"I doubt it," Ullman repeated, and he sounded sad. "The place in Florida is a dump, if the out-and-out truth is to be spoken. The Overlook is my real job. Take good care of it for me, Mr Torrance."

"I think it will be here when you get back next spring," Jack said and a thought flashed through Danny's mind.

(but will we?)

So, what this reads as to me is reluctantly turning over responsibility of something to someone else and it all going to hell in a handbasket.

I continued the SWG 30-Day Character Study!

Day 16 of SWG 30-Day Character Study. My character is Mairon | Sauron | Annatar.

Today's prompt: Down Memory Lane, Part Three. Imagine your character keeping a box of little mementoes that are important to them. Write a list, make a sketch, or create a fanwork where these mementoes feature.

I drew Annatar's box of memories he kept locked in his room in Ost-in-Edhil. The list of items:

- a collection of Celebrimbor's notes, and notes and diagrams they have made together
- an unused love potion (it wasn't needed, after all)
- Celebrimbor's handkerchief
- a ring and a bracelet Celebrimbor gave to Annatar as a gift
- an amethyst rock from Mordor
- a vial of molten lava from Sauron's forge in Mordor, sealed with magic
- a lock of Melkor's hair he gave to Mairon as a keepsake before sending him away
